| The second hole is rightly the number one handicap; long with strategically placed bunkers off the tees and a very well protected green. Short hitters can aim between the two left side bunkers but risk going over the cart path if they go left or long. Long hitters should aim at the far trap on the left (244 yards from white tee) or to the right of it but will risk the steep sided bunkers on the right side if they come up short; too long and it's into the far bunker. The second shot gives you a choice of fairways to the left or right. The left side gives a better line into the green for the third shot; avoiding going over the steep sided bunkers on the right. Low handicappers who can hit a long second shot may appreciate the extra fairway room on the right and the opportunity to hit a third shot wedge precisely onto the pin even if they are going over the bunkers. One very helpful local rule for this hole is that landscaped and "beautification" areas around the entire course permit a free drop. Most players reasonable interpret this rule to include the forsythia bushes along the left side of the hole between the cart path and the fairway. Generally landscape areas are those plantings that have chips laid under them. Though the wording of the rule is a bit vague as "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Some hackers think the fescue and wildflowers that are common throughout the course are "beautification areas". But if it keeps play moving along and you have no wagers down … whatever. |
